Angel Hurtado

Born in El Tocuyo in 1927, he studied in Venezuela at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Caracas under the direction of Antonio Edmundo Monsanto (1945-1950). After completing his studies, he joined a group of artists who formed the Taller Libre de Arte.

In 1954, he traveled to Paris for the first time to refine his painting techniques and took the opportunity to visit and study the major European museums. He began his work in filmmaking as a film editor for French Television, creating his first two documentaries: Vibraciones, about the kinetic works of artist Jesús Soto, and El cuarto de al lado, which incorporated “Musique Concrète,” an experimental music technique used in French television. Both films were screened at the Sorbonne Film Club and the Parnasse Cinema in 1959. In Paris, he also wrote the script for the film La Metamorfosis, based on Franz Kafka’s work, which was later produced in 1962 for Channel 5 of Venezuela’s national television. This film was presented at The Television Film Festival in London in December 1963.

In 1959, he traveled to the United States, exhibiting at the Organization of American States (OAS) Art Gallery and the Roland D’Aenlle Gallery in New York. He returned to Caracas in 1960, where he taught painting and photography at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas and film journalism at the Central University of Venezuela.

In 1963, he moved back to Paris, dedicating himself to film editing while continuing his painting career. In 1970, he was invited by the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C., to lead the Audiovisual Unit of the Department of Arts. In 1976, this department became the Art Museum of the Americas, which he co-founded alongside art critic José Gómez Sicre. He continued in this role until 1988. That same year, he served as an honorary consultant and evaluator at the White House, advising on artworks received by U.S. presidents during their travels in Latin America.

In 1995, at the age of 68, he decided to retire and return to his homeland, choosing Margarita Island to focus entirely on his painting. His current work explores the Venezuelan landscape, not in a descriptive manner, but by capturing the emotions it evokes. He limits his compositions to essential and natural elements, avoiding depictions of human destruction, and instead imagines landscapes in their purest, most untouched state.

He has also continued his work as an art documentarian in Venezuela, producing videos about Venezuelan artists that are broadcast on the educational channel Vale TV.

Pintor y cineasta. Nació en El Tocuyo en 1927. Estudió en Venezuela en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Caracas, bajo la dirección de Antonio Edmundo Monsanto (1945-1950). A su salida formó parte del grupo de artistas que conformaron el Taller Libre de Arte.

En 1954, parte por primera vez a París donde perfecciona su trabajo pictórico y aprovecha para viajar y conocer los principales museos europeos. Empieza su actividad con la cinematografía como editor de cine para la Televisión Francesa, realizando sus dos primeros documentales: “Vibraciones”, sobre los trabajos cinéticos del artista Jesús Soto y; “El cuarto de al lado”, usando la “Música Concreta” que se experimentaba en la televisión francesa; ambos films fueron proyectados en el Cine-club de La Sorbona y en el Cinema “Parnasse”, en 1959. En Paris, también escribió el guión sobre el film “La Metamorfosis”, basado en la obra de Franz Kafka, realizado posteriormente en 1962 para el Canal 5 de la televisora nacional de Venezuela; este film participó en The Television Film Festival, Londres, diciembre de1963.

Viaja a Estados Unidos en 1959 y expone en la Galería de Arte de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y en la Galería Roland D’ Aenlle en Nueva York. Regresa a Caracas para 1960 y da clases en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Pintura y Fotografía  y  de Periodismo cinematográfico en la Universidad Central de Venezuela.

En 1963, regresa a Paris dedicándose a la Edición y montaje de películas, sin abandonar su trabajo pictórico hasta 1970 cuando es llamado por la Organización de Estados Americanos (0EA)  en Washington DC, para dirigir la Unidad Audiovisual del Departamento de Artes. En 1976,  ese departamento se convirtió en el  “Museo de Arte de las Américas” (Art Museum of the Américas), del cual fue co-fundador junto con el crítico de arte José Gómez Sicre, actividad que continua hasta 1988. Para este mismo año, ejerce como consultor y evaluador (Ad-Honorem) en la Casa Blanca, de las obras de artes que recibían los presidentes norteamericanos, en sus viajes por América Latina.

Para 1995, a la edad de 68 años, decide retirarse y volver a su país de origen; eligiendo la Isla de Margarita, para continuar con mayor dedicación su trabajo pictórico. En la actualidad, trabaja en temas basados en el paisaje venezolano  sin buscar un carácter  descriptivo tal como se lo ve, sino tomando en cuenta las diferentes emociones que el paisaje pueda transmitir, limitándose a los elementos compositivos esenciales y naturales para su preservación, evitando mostrar la huella destructora del hombre. Son paisajes primigenios imaginándolos en su estado natural más puro.

Su labor de documentalista de arte la ha continuado en Venezuela, con la realización de videos sobre artistas venezolanos que se trasmiten por el canal educativo Vale TV.
